Bybit Launches First Options Market for Tokenized Real-World Assets: Tether Gold

Bybit has rolled out a dedicated options market for Tether Gold, the tokenized version of physical gold. The exchange says it's the first time any platform has offered an options market specifically for a tokenized real-world asset. The move gives traders a way to hedge or speculate on the price of gold using crypto infrastructure — a pitch aimed squarely at institutional players who want regulated-style derivatives without leaving the digital-asset space.

Options on tokenized gold

Tether Gold is a stablecoin-like token, but its value tracks the spot price of one fine troy ounce of gold stored in Swiss vaults. Until now, crypto traders could only buy or sell the token outright, or use it as collateral. Bybit's new market lets them trade options contracts on Tether Gold — giving them the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the token at a fixed price before a set date. That's a structure that's been standard in traditional commodity markets for decades but was missing from the tokenized-asset sector.

A bid for institutional volume

The timing isn't accidental. Institutional money has been cautious about tokenized real-world assets partly because the derivative tools they rely on — options, futures, swaps — aren't available. Bybit is trying to close that gap. The offering lets funds manage gold exposure through a single crypto exchange, instead of juggling a bullion account or a traditional brokerage. If it catches on, Bybit could see a new wave of volume from firms that want the efficiency of blockchain settlement with the risk-management tools of conventional finance.

First of its kind for RWAs

Tokenized real-world assets — everything from Treasury bills to real estate to commodities — have been a growing niche in crypto, but most of the liquidity is in spot markets. Bybit's options market is the first to target that category directly. Whether it sparks a wave of similar products depends on adoption. If institutions start treating Tether Gold options like they treat gold futures, other exchanges will likely follow. Bybit didn't announce any immediate plans to list options on other tokenized assets, but the infrastructure is in place.
