Cardano On-Chain Analysis Shows 925M ADA Transactions Share Close Common Ancestor

An independent on-chain analysis has traced a large portion of Cardano's 2021 rally transactions back to a common ancestor far closer than the network's Genesis UTxO. Published by Masato Alexander, the tracing covers 925 million ADA and nine separate 20 million ADA transactions, finding they share a common ancestor that reduces the number of intermediary hops from roughly 40 to as few as one to seven.

What the Tracing Found

Alexander's work uses transaction graphs and hop-by-hop tracing to map the flow of funds. The analysis shows that the 925 million ADA and the nine smaller blocks of 20 million ADA all trace back to a single unspent transaction output (UTxO) that predates the Genesis UTxO by a significant margin. In the blockchain, the Genesis UTxO is the very first output, but Alexander claims these transactions have an ancestor even closer in the chain—meaning fewer steps between the original source and the final addresses. He did not offer a legal interpretation of the findings, noting explicitly that the work 'is not a legal adjudication of intent or control.'

Cardano's Transparency Report on Vouchers

Separately, Cardano's recent transparency report indicates that 99.2% of all voucher-related ADA was redeemed by users. The unredeemed portion amounted to 390 vouchers, representing 318 million ADA, which the foundation swept into its reserves after the Byron-era redemption window closed. The large number of unredeemed vouchers, combined with Alexander's tracing, raises questions about how those 318 million ADA were initially distributed and what kind of control structures existed during the early days of the network.

Foundation Filings Show Hoskinson's 'Enforcer' Role

Adding another layer to the story, Thomas Braziel has identified Isle of Man foundation filings that list Charles Hoskinson as an 'Enforcer' in an early Cardano foundation structure. Under Isle of Man law, that role implies active oversight responsibilities, though Braziel did not elaborate on what specific powers the position carried. The filings give a clearer picture of the legal architecture around Cardano during its formative period, when most of the unredeemed vouchers were still outstanding. Whether the tracing data and the foundation's internal governance are connected remains an open question—Alexander's analysis stops short of assigning control, and the foundation has not commented on the findings.

The public now has a detailed map of how large sums of ADA moved during the 2021 rally. But without legal or official confirmation, the question of who or what controlled those funds stays unanswered.
