Cash App Launches Fee-Free Bitcoin DCA, Adds Bitkey Wallet Support

Cash App has rolled out fee-free Bitcoin dollar-cost averaging and integrated its platform with the Bitkey self-custody wallet, the company said this week. The move removes transaction fees on recurring Bitcoin buys — a first for the app — and gives users a direct link to a hardware wallet for long-term storage.

No fees on recurring buys

Dollar-cost averaging, or DCA, lets users buy a fixed amount of Bitcoin on a regular schedule — daily, weekly, or every two weeks. Cash App already offered the feature, but it charged a fee on each purchase. Now those fees are gone for DCA orders. The change applies to all new and existing recurring buys. Users can set up a plan in the app and the Bitcoin lands in their Cash App balance, same as before, but without the cut that used to go to the company.

The timing isn't accidental. With Bitcoin trading in a range this summer, many retail investors are looking for low-friction ways to accumulate. Cash App is betting that fee-free DCA will pull in users who were put off by the small but persistent cost of buying regularly.

The other half of the announcement is the Bitkey integration. Bitkey is a self-custody wallet from Block, Cash App's parent company. It combines a mobile app, a hardware device, and a set of backup keys. Users can now send Bitcoin from their Cash App balance directly to their Bitkey wallet with a few taps. The transfer is free, and the Bitcoin leaves Cash App's custody entirely.

That's a notable shift. Cash App has long been a place where people buy and hold Bitcoin inside the app. By adding a direct pipeline to a self-custody wallet, the company is acknowledging that not everyone wants to leave their coins on an exchange. It also keeps users inside the Block ecosystem — once the Bitcoin is in Bitkey, it's still under Block's umbrella, but the user controls the keys.

Cash App is one of the biggest on-ramps for Bitcoin in the US, especially among younger and lower-income users. Fee-free DCA lowers the barrier to entry for people who want to build a position over time. The Bitkey integration, meanwhile, addresses a growing demand for self-custody — a trend that accelerated after the exchange collapses of 2022 and 2023.

Block has been doubling down on Bitcoin for years. The company holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet and has built a suite of tools around the asset. Bitkey launched in late 2024, and Cash App's integration brings it to a much larger user base. The features are rolling out now to Cash App users in the US. There's no word yet on international availability.
