Celestia Labs, the developer behind the modular Layer 1 blockchain Celestia, has acquired Sovereign Labs. The deal, announced today in New York, brings in a team of engineers and vaults Sovereign Labs co-founder Preston Evans into the role of chief technology officer at Celestia Labs.
Preston Evans takes the CTO seat
Evans, who co-founded Sovereign Labs, will now lead Celestia's technical strategy. The promotion is effective immediately. Celestia Labs said the acquisition is about bringing key talent on board — not just code or patents. Sovereign Labs had been working on rollup interoperability and shared sequencing, areas that overlap with Celestia's modular thesis.
Why Celestia bought a rollup team
Celestia Labs has long pitched its blockchain as a data-availability layer that other chains build on top of. But the company is now positioning itself as a full-stack custom blockchain development partner for enterprises. That shift requires engineers who can build end-to-end solutions, not just a base layer. Sovereign Labs' team has experience shipping production rollups, which fits that need.
Enterprise pivot takes shape
The move signals that Celestia Labs sees a market in helping companies spin up their own blockchains — handling everything from consensus to settlement. It's a different pitch than the pure infrastructure play. The company didn't disclose financial terms of the acquisition, and it's not yet clear how the Sovereign Labs team will be integrated into Celestia's existing org chart. Evans starts his CTO role today, and the rest of the Sovereign Labs staff will join Celestia's engineering division.
What comes next
Celestia Labs now has to deliver on the enterprise promise. The company hasn't announced any specific client partnerships or a timeline for a full-stack product. With Evans in the CTO seat, the technical roadmap is his to set. The acquisition closed immediately, and the combined team is expected to begin work on integration this week.
