Circle Launches cirBTC to Challenge WBTC in $9B Wrapped Bitcoin Market

Circle rolled out cirBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed ERC-20 token on Ethereum mainnet, on Sunday. The institutional-only product directly challenges WBTC's 85% share of the $9 billion wrapped Bitcoin market. Real-time reserve verification via Chainlink eliminates third-party attestations from the equation.

Institutional-Only Access

CirBTC is locked to OTC desks, market makers, lenders and DeFi protocols. Retail users won't find it on exchanges. Circle says this avoids the volatility retail markets bring while meeting big players' specific needs. The move deliberately bypasses the customer base that fueled WBTC's early growth.

Proof Without Paperwork

Reserves live in segregated regulated custody with verification straight from Bitcoin blockchain wallet addresses. No custodian statements or external auditors. Chainlink oracles pull the data directly as transactions happen. Circle stressed this kills the trust gap that's haunted wrapped tokens in the past.

Neutrality as Leverage

Circle highlighted its lack of exchange operations as a competitive edge. Unlike Kraken, Binance, Bitget and OKX—their wrapped BTC rivals—Circle doesn't run trading desks that could conflict with clients. That's the pitch to institutions wary of platform bias. The company's USDC infrastructure handles minting and redemption while keeping Bitcoin reserves separate from corporate funds.

Market Share Stakes

WBTC still holds 85% of the $15-20 billion tokenized Bitcoin space as of this quarter. cbBTC claims about $5.9 billion while other platforms split the remainder. cirBTC's entry puts that $9 billion WBTC chunk squarely in Circle's sights. Total wrapped BTC remains under 2% of Bitcoin's $1.7 trillion market cap.

Initial institutional adoption began Monday with major OTC desks moving to integrate the token. Circle hasn't signaled retail expansion plans but expects DeFi protocols to start using cirBTC within the month.
