Circle has released a new tool called the Discovery API, designed to let AI agents find and pay for services using the company's USDC stablecoin. The move positions USDC at the center of a growing push to automate commerce through artificial intelligence.
What the Discovery API does
The API acts as a bridge between AI agents and payment systems. It allows an AI — whether a chatbot, a scheduling tool, or a more complex autonomous system — to search for a service provider, negotiate terms, and settle the transaction in USDC. Circle says the API handles the discovery and payment steps that previously required human intervention.
That means an AI agent could book a ride, order supplies, or pay a freelancer without a person clicking “confirm.” The stablecoin element keeps the value stable during the transaction, avoiding the volatility that makes other cryptocurrencies impractical for everyday purchases.
Automated payments have been a missing piece in the AI ecosystem. Many AI agents can recommend actions or generate invoices, but they can't actually complete a purchase. The Discovery API closes that loop. By giving AI agents the ability to find and pay for services, Circle is opening the door to fully autonomous workflows.
This could accelerate AI-driven commerce in sectors like logistics, digital content, and on-demand services. A delivery drone, for example, could use the API to pay for charging station access. A content generator could pay for image licenses on the fly. The potential is broad, but the real test will be adoption by developers and businesses.
Potential impact on stablecoin market dynamics
USDC is already one of the largest stablecoins by market cap, but it competes directly with Tether (USDT) and newer entrants like PayPal's PYUSD. The Discovery API gives USDC a functional advantage: it's not just a store of value or a trading pair, but a payment rail for AI agents. That utility could drive demand and usage, potentially reshaping the stablecoin landscape.
If developers build applications that rely on the Discovery API, USDC could become the default currency for machine-to-machine payments. That would create network effects that competitors would find hard to replicate quickly. But the API is only as strong as the ecosystem around it — Circle needs merchants and service providers to accept USDC payments through the API for it to gain traction.
The API is live now. How competitors respond and how quickly the developer community embraces it will determine whether this launch reshapes stablecoin dynamics or remains a niche feature.
