CME to Launch 24/7 Crypto Futures Trading on May 29

CME Group will flip the switch on 24/7 trading for crypto futures and options this Friday, May 29, pending regulatory sign-off. The exchange is extending its existing crypto lineup — already handling a record $3 trillion in notional volume last year — to run around the clock on CME Globex and ClearPort, with only brief maintenance windows. The move targets the so-called 'CME gap,' the weekend price void that has long frustrated institutional hedgers.

How weekend trades will work

Orders placed from Friday evening through Sunday evening will carry the next business day's trade date. Clearing, settlement, and regulatory reporting for those weekend trades won't happen until Monday. Clearing members need prior approval from CME Clearing and must have risk policies that cover the supplemental trading hours. It's a structure designed to let firms hedge without blowing up their weekend risk limits.

Record volumes drove the decision

CME's crypto derivatives business has been on a tear. In 2025, the exchange clocked $3 trillion notional volume across its Bitcoin and Ether futures and options. Through May of this year, average daily contracts hit 407,200 — up 46% from the same period in 2025. That demand, CME says, came from clients who wanted to manage digital-asset risk more continuously. The 24/7 schedule is the direct result.

Bitcoin holds above $75K as launch nears

Bitcoin traded around $75,782 on Wednesday, with a market cap near $1.52 trillion and 24-hour volume of roughly $35.17 billion. The price level matters: the CME gap often forms when Bitcoin moves sharply between Friday's close and Monday's open, and institutional players have been forced to sit on their hands. That changes this weekend — if regulators clear the final hurdle.

The exchange hasn't said which regulator still needs to give the nod, but the start date is set. Friday's rollout will be the first time a major U.S. derivatives exchange offers crypto futures and options trading on a 24/7 basis. Whether retail platforms follow suit is an open question.
