Coinbase is rolling out 50x leverage perpetual futures on its Base app, powered by an integration with Hyperliquid. The move gives retail users access to high-octane crypto derivatives directly inside the exchange's consumer app, a step that could meaningfully lift user activity and revenue. But it also drops Coinbase squarely into the regulatory gray zone that surrounds leveraged trading.
Perps on Base
The integration adds perpetual futures with up to 50x leverage to the Base app. Hyperliquid, a derivatives platform, is providing the matching engine and infrastructure. Users can now trade these contracts without leaving Coinbase's consumer app. That's a big deal for a product that's been a staple of offshore exchanges but less common in US-facing apps.
The engagement bet
Coinbase is clearly betting that perps will keep users on the app longer and bring in more trading volume. The company said the integration could significantly boost user engagement and revenue. That's not a small claim. Perps are one of the most active corners of crypto trading, and adding them to a mainstream app could pull in a new wave of traders.
Regulatory headwinds
Leveraged trading is a sensitive area. Regulators have repeatedly flagged the risks of high-leverage products, and Coinbase will have to navigate those rules as it rolls this out. The integration itself doesn't sidestep that; it just puts the product in front of more people. How regulators respond to a major US exchange offering 50x leverage will be the next test.
