Brian Armstrong sees tokenized assets as the iPhone of finance. The Coinbase CEO made the comparison on X on August 29, arguing that putting real-world assets on a blockchain could let a new generation of finance companies build things that weren't possible before. The comments land as Japan's financial regulators and three megabanks push ahead with their own plan for instant, 24/7 settlement of stocks and government bonds using blockchain.
The iPhone comparison
Armstrong pointed to global access, better utility, and 24/7 trading as the immediate wins from tokenization. He said the more compelling version is a one-to-one representation of an asset on a blockchain, not a wrapped or synthetic version. He also suggested that newer companies, not incumbents, might be the first to issue stock natively on a blockchain.
Japan's 24/7 settlement plan
Japan's Financial Services Agency, the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Japan, and three megabanks are working on a system for instant settlement of securities. The plan targets a strategy by early 2027, with operations possibly starting in the early 2030s. One idea under consideration: tokenizing bank deposits held at the Bank of Japan into a digital currency for institutional blockchain settlement.
Coinbase's stock push
Coinbase is already moving beyond crypto trading into stocks and prediction markets. Its stock offering is conventional, not tokenized, and uses Apex Fintech Solutions for backend operations. Armstrong's comments sketch a direction, but they don't include any Coinbase-specific numbers on adoption, volume, or revenue from tokenized assets.
Regulatory limbo
Congress has been debating the Clarity Act, which would set rules for crypto integration, but disagreements between the crypto industry and the banking sector have stalled progress. That leaves the regulatory path for tokenized securities unclear, even as the technology moves forward.
The gap between Armstrong's vision and measurable traction is still wide. Japan's system is years from operation, and Coinbase hasn't said how much of its business tokenization could become. The next concrete step is Japan's strategy document, due by early 2027.
