Coinbase has promoted longtime engineer Rob Witoff to chief technology officer, the company said Wednesday. Witoff, one of the crypto exchange's earliest builders, takes the role as Coinbase doubles down on integrating artificial intelligence into its products and internal tools.
From early engineer to top tech role
Witoff joined Coinbase when the company was still a small startup. He helped build the platform's core infrastructure and has held various engineering leadership positions over the years. The promotion to CTO puts him in charge of Coinbase's overall technology strategy and engineering teams.
The company did not say who Witoff replaces or whether the CTO role had been vacant. Coinbase's previous CTO, Balaji Srinivasan, left in 2019. Since then, the company has operated without a single person holding that title, instead relying on a group of senior engineering leaders.
AI push behind the promotion
The appointment comes as Coinbase accelerates its push toward AI-powered development. The company has been experimenting with generative AI for customer support, fraud detection, and developer tools. Witoff's background in building scalable systems is expected to help integrate AI more deeply into Coinbase's products.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has publicly emphasized the importance of AI for the company's future. In recent months, the exchange launched an AI-powered assistant for traders and began using machine learning models to flag suspicious transactions. Witoff's promotion signals that AI is now a central pillar of Coinbase's technology roadmap.
What Witoff brings to the job
Witoff is known inside Coinbase for his hands-on engineering approach and his work on the company's trading engine and wallet infrastructure. He has been with the firm through multiple crypto market cycles, including the 2017 boom, the 2022 crash, and the current recovery. That experience gives him a long view of the technical challenges Coinbase faces.
In a statement, Armstrong called Witoff "one of the most talented engineers I've ever worked with" and said his promotion reflects the company's commitment to building technology that can scale to billions of users. Witoff did not provide a public comment.
Unanswered questions
Coinbase has not detailed how Witoff's appointment will change its product lineup or engineering structure. The company is still fighting a legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over whether many of the tokens it lists are securities. That case could shape how Coinbase builds future products, including any AI-driven features that involve token trading or custody.
Witoff's first major test as CTO may come later this year, when Coinbase is expected to roll out new AI tools for its retail and institutional customers. The company has not set a specific release date.
