Coinbase has launched a new service allowing investors to trade SpaceX futures before the private rocket company goes public. The move gives traders a way to bet on the valuation of Elon Musk's space venture without waiting for an initial public offering.
How pre-IPO futures work
Pre-IPO trading lets buyers and sellers exchange contracts tied to a private company's future stock price. In this case, Coinbase is offering futures contracts pegged to SpaceX's valuation. The contracts settle when—or if—SpaceX eventually lists on a public exchange. Until then, prices are based on secondary-market data and investor sentiment.
The exchange said the product is designed for qualified investors, though it did not specify minimum investment thresholds. Futures are typically leveraged instruments, meaning gains and losses can be amplified compared to direct stock ownership.
Why SpaceX futures attract attention
SpaceX remains one of the most closely watched private companies globally. Its Starlink satellite internet business and Starship rocket program have drawn intense interest from retail and institutional investors alike. Because SpaceX has not filed for an IPO, traditional stock buyers have had few options to gain exposure beyond private secondary markets.
Coinbase's futures product changes that equation. By listing a tradable contract on its platform, the company opens a regulated channel for speculation on SpaceX's trajectory. The move also signals Coinbase's ambition to expand beyond cryptocurrencies and into broader financial derivatives.
Coinbase's expansion into traditional finance
The launch comes as the crypto exchange pushes deeper into conventional markets. Coinbase already offers margin trading, staking, and custody services. Adding pre-IPO futures for a marquee name like SpaceX could attract a new class of users who might not otherwise trade on the platform.
The company did not disclose trading volumes or the number of participants so far. It also declined to comment on whether it plans to add futures for other private companies. For now, the SpaceX contract is the only pre-IPO offering on Coinbase.
Investors can start trading the futures immediately through Coinbase's advanced trading interface. The exchange will mark the contracts to market daily and require margin from buyers and sellers alike.
