COINHUB Installs Western Japan’s First Bitcoin ATM at Osaka Mall

COINHUB has installed Western Japan’s first Bitcoin ATM at Tennoji MIO, a shopping complex in Osaka, giving locals and tourists a new way to buy and sell the cryptocurrency with cash. The machine went live this week in the bustling Tennoji district, one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.

Why Tennoji MIO

The choice of Tennoji MIO isn’t accidental. The mall sits directly above Tennoji Station, a major rail and subway interchange that handles hundreds of thousands of passengers daily. Putting a Bitcoin ATM there means high foot traffic and easy access for people who aren’t already plugged into crypto exchanges. COINHUB, which operates a string of ATMs across Japan, now adds Osaka to its network after focusing primarily on the Tokyo area and other eastern cities.

What the machine does

Like most Bitcoin ATMs, the terminal lets users insert cash to buy Bitcoin or sell Bitcoin for cash, with identity verification handled via a smartphone scan. The exact fees and daily limits weren’t disclosed in the announcement, but typical operators charge a markup over the spot rate. The machine accepts Japanese yen and dispenses cash on sell transactions.

Japan’s ATM landscape

Japan has long had a small but steady number of Bitcoin ATMs, concentrated in Tokyo and major tourist destinations. Western Japan — which includes cities like Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe — had none until this install. The gap was notable given Osaka’s size as Japan’s second-largest metropolitan economy. COINHUB’s move suggests growing demand for physical crypto touchpoints outside the capital.

The timing also aligns with Japan’s relatively clear regulatory framework for crypto. The country’s Payment Services Act requires ATM operators to register with the Financial Services Agency and comply with anti-money laundering rules. COINHUB is a registered operator, so the machine should be fully compliant from day one.

What’s next

COINHUB hasn’t said whether it plans to add more ATMs in the Kansai region, but the Osaka install could be a test. If usage is strong, other shopping centers and train stations in Western Japan may get similar machines. For now, anyone in Osaka wanting to touch Bitcoin can head to Tennoji MIO and skip the exchange sign-up process.
