Consensys Confirms North Korea-Linked Consultant Worked on MetaMask

Consensys confirmed this week that a consultant with ties to North Korea worked on MetaMask for about a month. The company said access was terminated and that no evidence of theft or malicious code was found. The disclosure comes as the crypto industry remains on edge over state-linked infiltration attempts.

What Consensys found

The consultant had access to MetaMask's development environment for roughly a month before the connection was cut. Consensys said it found no stolen funds or injected backdoors. The company didn't name the consultant or specify which North Korean entity they were linked to. The incident underscores the challenge of vetting contractors in a global, remote workforce.

Knaken declared bankrupt

A Rotterdam court declared Dutch crypto exchange Knaken bankrupt after roughly €7 million ($7.6 million) in customer funds went missing. Users had been unable to access the platform for about a month before the ruling. The bankruptcy is the latest in a string of European exchange failures tied to missing client money. It's not clear yet whether customers will recover any of their funds.

Injective files to become a transfer agent

Injective submitted Form TA-1 to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, seeking registration as a transfer agent. If approved, the blockchain project would be able to maintain official ownership records for tokenized securities on-chain. The move is a bet that regulators will eventually allow distributed ledgers to replace traditional stock registries. The SEC hasn't set a timeline for a decision.

Robinhood Chain draws early interest

Robinhood Chain saw over $70 million worth of ETH bridged to its network in its first weeks. That's a strong signal of early demand, but sustainability remains uncertain. The chain launched with a focus on low fees and retail-friendly trading. Whether it can hold onto that momentum will depend on actual usage beyond the initial bridge rush.

Next up: Consensys is expected to brief partners on its contractor screening process. Knaken's bankruptcy proceedings are set to begin in Rotterdam next month. Injective's SEC filing is now public, and the agency's 45-day review window starts ticking.
