Crypto ETFs Bleed $593M in a Week as Bitcoin and Ether Funds Both Retreat

U.S. crypto ETFs stayed under pressure in the week through Oct. 16, with Bitcoin funds losing about $229 million and Ether funds shedding $320 million. Combined, the products gave back $593 million over the stretch. That's still a hefty sum — but it's a slower bleed than the week before.

The pace of withdrawals eased sharply: outflows fell 52% week-over-week. Selling was spread across all the major ETFs, not concentrated in any single product, as investors kept trimming risk exposure.

Where the money went

Ether took the bigger hit. The $320 million pulled from Ether ETFs was roughly 40% larger than the Bitcoin ETF outflow, a gap worth noting because Ether funds have generally been the smaller corner of the market. Bitcoin ETFs lost $229 million, still a meaningful exit but a milder one by comparison.

No single issuer carried the whole load. The selling touched every major fund in the category — a broad de-risking rather than a run on one name. That pattern tends to point at allocation calls, not fund-specific problems.

Why the 52% drop matters

Half the previous week's outflow is still an outflow. But direction and pace are two different signals. The $593 million total is a decline, not a reversal — yet the 52% week-over-week slowdown suggests the heaviest selling may have already passed.

For anyone tracking these products as a proxy for institutional appetite, the distinction is the story: demand cooled, then cooled more slowly. Whether that turns into flat flows or fresh inflows is the open question.

What to watch

Daily flow data for the week starting Oct. 19 will show whether the easing holds or reverses. If the 52% slowdown was a one-week breather, the totals climb again. If it's the start of stabilization, the next weekly print should come in smaller still.

Also worth tracking: whether Ether ETFs keep outpacing Bitcoin funds on the way out. Ether's larger outflow this week wasn't the usual shape for these products, and a second week in the same direction would make it a trend rather than a blip.

The broader takeaway is simpler. Crypto ETF money is still leaving — just more slowly. Investors will get the next read when the following week's flow data lands.
