CryptoQuant's Bitcoin Indicator Flashes 'Early Bull' for First Time Since March 2023

Bitcoin's on-chain health metric just gave its first green signal in over three years. CryptoQuant's Bull-Bear Cycle Indicator flipped to 'Early Bull' territory for the first time since March 2023. The shift marks a potential turning point after months of readings that ranged from 'Extreme Bear' to simply 'Bear'.

How the indicator works

The indicator is built on CryptoQuant's P&L Index and its 365-day moving average. When the index crosses above the moving average, it turns green — signaling the start of an 'Early Bull' phase. When it falls below, it goes red. The system has been in bearish territory since early 2024, hitting 'Extreme Bear' in early February and staying in 'Bear' through March and April.

What history says about this signal

The track record is mixed but notable. Similar green signals appeared in 2019 and 2023 — both times followed by sustained bullish transitions. But there's a false signal too: March 2022, when the indicator turned green briefly before Bitcoin topped locally and continued its downtrend. The 2022 miss is a reminder that no single metric calls bottoms perfectly.

From extreme bear to green

The speed of the flip is what stands out. The indicator was in 'Extreme Bear' just three months ago, in early February. That's the most pessimistic reading in the system. Through March and April it climbed into plain 'Bear' territory. Now it's green. That kind of rapid recovery from extreme pessimism has historically preceded big moves — though again, not always in the right direction.

Bitcoin price at $80,700

Bitcoin was trading at about $80,700 at the time of writing, down 0.5% in the last 24 hours. The price action itself hasn't confirmed the on-chain signal yet — the green flash came while BTC was still chopping sideways. The next question is whether this signal will follow the bullish pattern of 2019 and 2023 or repeat the false breakout of March 2022.
