Ethereum took a harsh public beating on Monday from a prominent European crypto fund manager. Justin Bons, CIO of Cyber Capital — described as Europe’s oldest crypto investment fund — used X to call Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin a 'dictator' and said the network's direction is a 'fatal combination' of centralized governance and flawed scaling choices. The broadside landed as ETH trades at $1,997, down 15% over the past month and roughly 60% below its all-time high near $5,000.
What Bons said
Bons didn’t hold back. He argued that Ethereum's governance is centralized, and that its scaling roadmap — specifically the push to Layer 2 rollups and ZK-EVMs — has led to a loss of both usage and fee revenue. The network, he claimed, is 'utterly uncompetitive.' He went further, saying there is 'no hope' for Ethereum because the mechanisms for change are already captured and leadership is 'more extreme than ever.'
Governance and the rivals
The critique zeroed in on how Ethereum makes decisions. Bons argued that the core team, led by Buterin, holds disproportionate power, making real decentralization an illusion. He contrasted Ethereum unfavorably with several other networks. Solana and Hyperliquid, he wrote, now have the highest fees and usage. NEAR he called 'a great option.' And Cardano, he said, is more decentralized than Ethereum today. None of these are exactly friendly competitors — Cyber Capital has holdings across the ecosystem — but Bons was clear about where he sees the momentum.
Market reality
The timing isn’t great for Ethereum. The network has struggled to translate its high TVL and developer mindshare into sustained price action. ETH’s 60% drawdown from its peak is deeper than many major altcoins this cycle. Bons’s remarks add to a growing chorus of critics who argue that Ethereum’s Layer 2 strategy has fragmented liquidity and user experience, making it less attractive for new applications. Whether Solana or Hyperliquid can sustain their current fee levels is another question — but for now, they’re the ones making the noise.
