Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Stir, Moving $94M as Price Hits Weekly High

Bitcoin pushed to a weekly high of $72,400 on Wednesday, and on the same day, blockchain data shows a notable shift: 1,314.41 BTC worth about $94 million moved out of long-sleeping wallets. Most of that — roughly 1,214 BTC valued at $86 million — came from wallets that had not been touched in 11 years.

A $94 million wake-up

The movement happened over a 24-hour window. In that time, a total of 1,314.41 BTC changed hands from wallets that had been dormant for years. At the time of the move, that was worth roughly $94 million.

It's not a massive sum compared with bitcoin's daily trading volume, but the age of the coins makes it stand out. Coins that sit untouched for a decade or more are often referred to as "lost" or "forgotten," so when they suddenly move, it draws attention.

The 11-year-old share

The bulk of the activity came from wallets first seen in 2015 — 11 years ago. Those wallets moved about 1,214.42 BTC, worth approximately $86 million at the time. The remaining 100 BTC or so came from other long-dormant addresses.

It's rare to see that much old bitcoin move in one day. The wallets in question have been idle for over a decade, which means the original holders either recovered access or handed over the keys to someone else. Either way, the coins are now in motion.

Watching the destination

Where the coins went isn't public. Blockchain explorers show the transactions, but the receiving addresses haven't been labeled as belonging to any known exchange or custodian. That leaves the door open to interpretation: the move could be a sale, a transfer to cold storage, or part of an estate settlement.

The timing is curious, coming as bitcoin trades near its recent range and just after a weekly high. But without more on-chain detail, it's impossible to say whether this is a signal or just a holder finally deciding to move their coins. The next block will tell.
