DTCC Launches Pilot for Tokenized Stocks and Treasuries With BlackRock, Goldman, JPMorgan

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation has started a pilot program with nearly 40 financial firms to test tokenized versions of stocks and U.S. Treasury securities. The initiative brings together some of the biggest names on Wall Street — BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan are among the participants.

Who's in the pilot

DTCC, the central clearinghouse for U.S. securities markets, is running the test with roughly three dozen institutions. The three named firms — BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan — represent a cross-section of asset management, investment banking, and custody. The identities of the other participants have not been disclosed.

What tokenization means for markets

Tokenization refers to creating a digital representation of a traditional security on a blockchain. In this pilot, the tokens will represent equities and Treasuries. Proponents say the technology could allow for near-instant settlement, reduce operational costs, and enable trading around the clock. Critics point to regulatory uncertainty and the need for robust infrastructure before such systems go live at scale.

Why DTCC is leading this

DTCC sits at the center of the U.S. financial plumbing, clearing and settling the vast majority of securities trades. Its involvement gives the pilot a degree of credibility that smaller, standalone blockchain projects often lack. The organization has been exploring distributed ledger technology for years, and this test is one of the most concrete steps yet toward integrating tokenization into mainstream market infrastructure.

The pilot is underway now. DTCC has not set a public deadline for results or a timeline for moving the tokens into production. The participating firms will evaluate how the system handles trade execution, settlement, and custody. The findings could influence how regulators and market participants approach the broader adoption of tokenized securities.
