Erebor, the bank that built its name on serving crypto firms, is in talks to raise $1.5 billion at a $9.5 billion valuation. The raise would mark a major step for a lender that has seen deposits balloon this year.
Deposits quadrupled in four months
Erebor's total deposits grew from $1.1 billion in March to $4.6 billion by July. That's a fourfold jump in a single quarter. The bank attributes the growth to clients in crypto, AI, and defense.
The pace is fast. Most banks would kill for that kind of inflow. Erebor is getting it from three sectors that don't usually overlap.
Crypto, AI, and defense clients
The three sectors are an unusual mix. Crypto firms need a bank that won't shut them down. AI startups are sitting on cash. Defense contractors have their own banking needs. Erebor is serving all three.
That diversity might be the point. If one sector cools off, the others can carry the load. It also makes the bank less dependent on any single industry.
A $9.5 billion price tag
The $1.5 billion raise would value Erebor at $9.5 billion. That's a big number for a bank that was holding just over a billion in deposits four months ago.
The deal isn't done. Talks are ongoing, and terms could change. But if it closes, it would give Erebor a war chest to keep growing.
Erebor hasn't said when it expects to close the round. The bank is also staying quiet on how it would use the new capital. For now, the focus is on keeping the deposit momentum going.
