Ethereum Faces a Make-or-Break 2026 as Glamsterdam Upgrade Nears

Ethereum is trading at $2,134, well below its start-of-year price of $3,100 and just a few hundred dollars above the February low of $1,743. The next big catalyst — the Glamsterdam upgrade scheduled for June 2026 — is expected to slash gas fees by 78.6% and push throughput to 10,000 transactions per second. But whether that sends ETH soaring or sinking depends on factors outside the protocol's control.

The Glamsterdam upgrade

The upgrade is the centerpiece of Ethereum's 2026 roadmap. If it ships on time, the network gets a dramatic capacity boost. That's the kind of technical milestone that can reignite developer interest and attract new users. The projected fee reduction alone would make DeFi and NFT activity significantly cheaper — a direct answer to complaints that Ethereum has priced out retail users. But the upgrade's success isn't guaranteed. Delays happen, and a slip past June would rattle confidence.

Three roads for ETH price

The base case — which assumes moderate ETF inflows and Bitcoin above $85,000 — sees Ethereum closing 2026 between $3,000 and $4,200. That's a recovery from current levels, but not a breakout. The bull scenario paints a brighter picture: ETH at $5,000 to $7,500 if Bitcoin clears $90,000 and ETF money accelerates. That would require macro conditions to cooperate, and a broad crypto rally to lift all boats.

The bear scenario is ugly. If Glamsterdam is delayed and Bitcoin drops below $70,000, Ethereum could retest its February low near $1,743 and end the year below today's $2,134. The timing isn't great — the market is already nervous after a rough start to 2026, and a missed upgrade deadline would feel like a confirmation of the pessimism.

What's at stake

Ethereum has been here before: a major upgrade, high expectations, and a price that's been cut almost in half from the start of the year. The February low of $1,743 is the floor investors are watching. The upgrade, due in just a few weeks, is the fastest path to a rebound. If it delivers, the base case looks achievable. If it stumbles, the bears get their retest.
