Ethereum climbed 7% on Wednesday, with analysts pointing to a shift in capital flows and a fresh endorsement from Fundstrat's Tom Lee. Lee, speaking on CNBC, described Ethereum as the 'trust layer for AI agents' and doubled down on his $250,000 price target for the token.
Why capital is moving
The move comes as traders rotate profits from recent Bitcoin gains into Ethereum. Lee argued that Ethereum's role in powering decentralized AI applications — from data verification to agent-to-agent settlements — is becoming a key narrative. 'It's the infrastructure layer that AI needs to operate trustlessly,' he said.
The $250,000 target
Lee first floated the six-figure target earlier this year. He hasn't budged despite Ethereum trading well below that level. The call hinges on Ethereum capturing a meaningful share of the AI compute market, a thesis that's gaining traction as more projects build on its network.
The 7% pop puts Ethereum back above $3,800, but the real test will be whether it can hold those gains through the weekend. Options expiry on Friday could add volatility. For now, the AI narrative is giving bulls something to hang their hats on.
