Ethereum's staking ratio has climbed to a record 34%, according to on-chain data. The milestone means more than a third of all ETH is now locked in the Beacon Chain deposit contract, a level that strengthens the network's economic security but also raises fresh concerns about centralization and market liquidity.

What the record means for security

A higher staking ratio makes Ethereum more resistant to certain attacks. With more ETH at stake, the cost of attempting to corrupt the network grows proportionally. The 34% figure represents a new high since the chain transitioned to proof-of-stake in 2022, and the trend has been steadily upward as institutional and retail participants seek yield.

The enhanced security is a clear positive for the network's long-term health. But the same data that shows record participation also reveals a concentration of power among a handful of large staking providers.

Centralization risks in focus

Critics point out that a significant portion of staked ETH is controlled by a small number of entities — primarily liquid staking protocols and centralized exchanges. When a few validators control a large share of the network, the risk of coordinated behavior or regulatory pressure on those entities becomes a concern.

Ethereum's design assumes a broadly distributed set of validators. The current distribution, with Lido alone accounting for roughly a third of all staked ETH, has drawn repeated warnings from community members. The record staking ratio amplifies those worries: more staking doesn't automatically mean more decentralization.

Liquidity constraints emerge

Another side effect of the high staking ratio is reduced liquid supply. With 34% of ETH locked, the amount available for trading, DeFi activity, and other uses shrinks. That can lead to tighter spreads and higher volatility during periods of heavy demand.

Liquid staking derivatives — tokens like stETH that represent staked ETH — have helped alleviate some of the liquidity crunch, but they introduce their own risks. The derivatives trade at a slight discount to ETH at times, and the underlying staking positions remain locked until the Shanghai upgrade's withdrawal mechanism is fully utilized.

The timing isn't great for traders who need to move quickly. A thinner liquid supply can amplify price swings, especially during market stress.

What comes next

The Ethereum community is watching whether the staking ratio continues to climb or plateaus near 34%. Some validators may be waiting for clearer signals on withdrawal queue times and validator exit dynamics before committing more ETH.

Regulators are also paying attention. A network where a third of the supply is staked — and a large chunk of that is controlled by a few entities — could attract scrutiny from authorities concerned about systemic risk. No formal action has been announced, but the record ratio puts the issue front and center.

For now, the milestone is a double-edged sword: stronger security, but at the cost of centralization and liquidity that the ecosystem will have to manage carefully.
