The 12th European Blockchain Convention (EBC12) opens in Barcelona on September 16, the first major industry gathering since the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation took full effect. Organizers expect more than 5,000 attendees from 90 countries, with 80 of Europe's top 100 banks sending representatives — up from 50 last year. The two-day event at the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya will feature speakers from J.P. Morgan, the Financial Conduct Authority, Invesco, Coinbase, Fidelity International, BNY, and Hamilton Lane.
MiCA takes center stage
The timing is deliberate. EBC12 lands roughly 11 weeks after MiCA's full implementation deadline, giving regulators and market participants their first chance to meet face-to-face under the new rules. The Financial Conduct Authority's presence signals that UK regulators are watching closely, even though Britain isn't in the EU. Topics on the regulatory track include market structure, stablecoin oversight, and how the framework is bedding in across member states.
Banks and institutions pile in
Institutional momentum is hard to miss. Deutsche Börse invested $200 million in Kraken this year, while Santander's Openbank expanded crypto trading to Germany and Spain. The convention's bank attendance has nearly doubled year-over-year — 80 of Europe's top 100 banks will be there, compared to 50 at EBC11. That shift is reflected in the agenda, which leans heavily on institutional capital allocation and real-world asset tokenization.
What's on the agenda
Beyond regulation, the program covers stablecoins, central bank digital currencies, and the mechanics of tokenizing traditional assets. The event will host 10,000 pre-arranged one-to-one meetings, a Buy Side Breakfast for institutional investors, and a dedicated press room. It's a sign that the industry is moving past the hype cycle and into operational reality.
A bigger venue, bigger ambitions
EBC was founded in 2018 and has grown from a small meetup to a convention that now fills a premium venue. The move to the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya reflects that growth. With attendance topping 5,000 and institutional participation surging, the organizers are betting that MiCA's clarity will keep the momentum going. The convention runs through September 17. Whether that regulatory clarity translates into a sustained wave of institutional capital flows is the open question.
