Fortitude Buys 9,000 Bitmain Z15 Pro Miners for Zcash Network

Fortitude has agreed to purchase 9,000 Bitmain Antminer Z15 Pro machines, a move that will add a significant chunk of computing power to the Zcash network. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, brings a large number of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners to the privacy-focused cryptocurrency.

The Hardware Behind the Deal

The Z15 Pro is Bitmain's latest ASIC miner for the Equihash algorithm, the proof-of-work system Zcash uses. It replaces older models like the Z11 and Z15, offering a higher hashrate and better energy efficiency. Each unit is designed to mine Zcash and other Equihash-based coins, but the purchase is specifically tied to the Zcash network.

Bitmain, the Beijing-based manufacturer, has been a dominant supplier of ASIC miners for various cryptocurrencies. The Z15 Pro was released in 2020 and remains one of the most powerful miners available for Equihash. Fortitude's order of 9,000 units is a substantial volume, likely representing a multimillion-dollar investment.

Adding 9,000 Z15 Pro machines will boost the total hashrate on the Zcash network. A higher hashrate typically triggers a difficulty adjustment, which makes it harder for all miners to find blocks. That adjustment can squeeze out smaller operators running graphics cards or older, less efficient ASICs.

Zcash's difficulty retargets every block, so the network responds quickly to changes in computing power. If Fortitude brings all 9,000 machines online at once, the difficulty could spike, potentially reducing profitability for miners who can't keep up. The long-term effect depends on how many other miners join or leave the network.

The purchase also highlights the ongoing shift toward industrial-scale mining for Zcash. While the coin was designed to be ASIC-resistant, Bitmain's Z-series miners have been available for years, and large buyers like Fortitude can concentrate hashing power.

Fortitude's Play

Fortitude has not publicly stated its plans for the machines. The company could be setting up its own mining farm, leasing the hardware to other operators, or using it to secure a share of Zcash's block rewards. Without more details, the exact strategy remains unclear.

What is clear is the scale. Nine thousand miners is a large order by any measure. For context, the entire Zcash network's hashrate in early 2025 was around 10 gigahashes per second. A single Z15 Pro delivers about 420 kilohashes per second, so 9,000 units would add roughly 3.78 gigahashes — a 38% increase to the network's current power. (These figures are based on publicly available specs and network data, not from the deal itself.)

The purchase comes at a time when Zcash's price has been volatile, and mining margins are tight. Large investments in hardware suggest confidence in the coin's long-term prospects, but they also raise the bar for entry.

The machines are expected to be delivered and deployed over the next few months. How quickly they come online will determine the real impact on Zcash's mining landscape.
