French prosecutors have indicted one individual in connection with a cryptocurrency-related 'wrench attack' carried out by assailants who impersonated police officers, the latest in a string of similar violent robberies across the country. The indictment, handed down this week by a Paris court, charges the suspect with armed robbery and extortion, with the victim identified as a local crypto investor who was forced to transfer digital assets at gunpoint.
Inside the attack
The assault took place in early May near the victim's home in the suburbs of Paris. According to the indictment, two men wearing fake police badges and carrying what appeared to be service weapons confronted the victim as he entered his apartment building. They demanded access to his crypto wallets, threatening to kill him if he refused. The victim surrendered about 12 bitcoin — roughly $800,000 at the time — before the attackers fled. No arrests have been made of the second suspect.
Why it stands out
‘Wrench attacks’ — physical assaults aimed at stealing cryptocurrency holdings — have been a growing problem globally, but France has seen an unusual concentration this year. This case is notable because the attackers exploited the trust that people typically place in uniformed officers. Posing as police allowed them to get close to the victim without raising suspicion in a residential area. The French National Police have warned citizens not to open doors or comply with demands solely based on a badge or uniform, and to call 17 to verify any unscheduled police visit.
What comes next
The indicted suspect remains in custody pending trial, which is expected to begin in September. Authorities are still searching for the second assailant, whose identity is known. Meanwhile, crypto holders in France are being advised to avoid advertising their holdings publicly and to use hardware wallets with multi-signature protections. The case is also prompting lawmakers to consider whether harsher penalties for crypto-related violent crime are needed.
