France has not issued a fan token for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, missing what has become a standard play for major football federations to tap crypto-based fan engagement and revenue streams. With the tournament kicking off in a few months, no announcement has come from the French football federation or any partner platform.
What a fan token would have brought
Fan tokens let supporters vote on minor club decisions, unlock exclusive merchandise, and earn rewards — all while generating upfront token sale revenue and ongoing trading fees for the issuer. For a national team headed to the World Cup, the token could have offered a direct channel to millions of fans willing to spend on digital collectibles and voting rights. Without one, France forgoes that income and the chance to deepen fan loyalty through blockchain-based perks.
Why France might have held back
It's not clear why the federation passed. Regulatory uncertainty around crypto in France hasn't stopped other sports organizations — several Ligue 1 clubs already run fan tokens. Timing could be a factor: launching a token close to a major event requires careful coordination with exchanges and fan education. Or the federation may have judged the revenue too small relative to the operational hassle. Either way, the absence is notable at a moment when digital asset adoption in sports is still growing.
The window to launch before the World Cup is narrowing rapidly. Even if a token were announced today, marketing, exchange listings, and fan onboarding would take weeks. No word from the federation suggests a decision has been made to sit this one out.
