Galaxy has committed up to $5 million to help future-proof Bitcoin against the long-term threat of quantum computing, the firm announced this week. The investment targets a vulnerability that could eventually break the cryptographic foundations of the world's largest cryptocurrency.
The quantum threat to Bitcoin
Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve cryptography to secure transactions and protect private keys. Quantum computers, once powerful enough, could theoretically solve the underlying math problems in seconds — rendering current security obsolete. While large-scale quantum machines remain years away, the risk is considered existential for any blockchain that doesn't adapt.
Galaxy's $5 million bet
The funds will go toward research and development of quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions specifically for Bitcoin. Galaxy said the initiative is meant to ensure the network can transition to post-quantum algorithms before the threat materializes. The firm didn't specify which research partners or projects it will back, but described the commitment as a long-term hedge.
