Granite Protocol has gone live on Borrow on Bitcoin, a dedicated platform for Bitcoin-based decentralized finance lending. The launch, which took effect this week, marks another step in the push to build DeFi infrastructure directly on top of Bitcoin rather than on sidechains or alternative layer-1 networks.

Borrow on Bitcoin is a lending marketplace that lets users deposit Bitcoin and borrow against it — or lend their BTC to earn yield. Granite Protocol is the latest lending protocol to join the platform. The idea is to keep everything settled on Bitcoin's main chain, avoiding the bridge risks and liquidity fragmentation that have plagued cross-chain DeFi.
Why Bitcoin DeFi is gaining traction
Proponents of Bitcoin DeFi argue that it can offer lower borrowing rates because the underlying asset — Bitcoin — is more stable in terms of liquidity and market depth than many altcoins used in traditional DeFi.
