Hayes: AI Surveillance Driving Demand for Privacy Coins Like Zcash

Arthur Hayes told Consensus 2026 attendees this week that AI's rising surveillance power is pushing demand for privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. The former BitMEX CEO warned governments, tech giants, and AI systems are getting far better at tracking blockchain transactions. That makes financial privacy tools increasingly vital, he said.

Privacy in the AI Age

Hayes specifically highlighted Zcash as a coin positioned to benefit from these shifts. He argued that as monitoring capabilities improve, users will naturally seek stronger anonymity. It's a straightforward response to the new normal, he noted during his speech Friday.

Why Altcoins Won't Die

He pushed back hard against claims that institutional money and regulation will kill altcoins. Hayes compared crypto markets to stock markets where most ventures fail but a few hit massive returns. He believes these markets remain efficient spaces for testing new financial ideas. "The experiments keep coming," he said simply.

The Hyperliquid Play

Hayes called Hyperliquid his top altcoin bet right now. He pointed to its unusual structure where about 97 percent of protocol revenue flows back to token holders through buybacks. No VC firms received early tokens, which he said keeps things fair for users. That alignment matters more than hype, he stressed.

His remarks landed as regulators worldwide scrutinize privacy tools. Hayes didn't predict when the shift would accelerate but made one thing clear: privacy isn't optional anymore for crypto users.
