Hyperliquid's native token HYPE climbed 4.77% on July 21 to trade at $63, while trading volume surged 17% to $286 million, according to CoinMarketCap data. The rally came as the platform announced a major upgrade — HIP-4 — that will introduce decentralized prediction markets, directly challenging Polymarket's dominance in the space.
What HIP-4 brings
The HIP-4 upgrade is designed to let users create and trade on prediction markets directly on Hyperliquid's layer-1 blockchain. Unlike traditional centralized platforms, these markets will be fully on-chain, with settlement handled by smart contracts. The move expands Hyperliquid beyond its core business of perpetual futures trading into a new vertical that has seen explosive growth this year.
Hyperliquid's team has not disclosed a specific launch date for the prediction markets, but the HIP-4 proposal signals a clear strategic pivot. The platform already handles billions in daily trading volume, and adding prediction markets could attract a different class of users — those looking to bet on events ranging from election outcomes to sports results.
Competing with Polymarket
Polymarket, currently the largest decentralized prediction market platform, has processed over $1 billion in cumulative volume since its launch. Hyperliquid's entry threatens to siphon liquidity and users from Polymarket, especially given Hyperliquid's existing infrastructure and deep order books. The two platforms share a similar user base of crypto-native traders who value low fees and fast execution.
Hyperliquid's advantage lies in its integrated ecosystem. Users can already trade perpetuals, stake HYPE, and now will be able to bet on predictions without leaving the platform. Polymarket, by contrast, relies on the Polygon network and a separate token model. The HIP-4 upgrade could also introduce new incentive mechanisms to bootstrap liquidity for prediction markets, though details remain scarce.
Market reaction
The price jump and volume spike suggest traders are optimistic about the upgrade. HYPE's 4.77% gain outpaced the broader crypto market on July 21, when Bitcoin and Ethereum were mostly flat. The 17% volume increase indicates fresh interest rather than just price-driven activity.
Still, the upgrade is not yet live. The HIP-4 proposal must go through a governance vote by HYPE holders before implementation. If approved, the prediction markets could go live within weeks, but the timeline depends on community feedback and technical audits.
For now, Hyperliquid's team is focused on finalizing the smart contract code and preparing documentation for market creators. The next major milestone will be the governance vote, which is expected to be scheduled in early August.
