Pavel Durov wants to put a crypto wallet in the hands of every Telegram user. The messaging app's founder said the company is working on a wallet that would let its billion-plus users send and receive crypto instantly with zero fees. The announcement sent Telegram's native Gram token up 7% on Wednesday.
The wallet plan
Durov's plan is straightforward: build a wallet directly into Telegram. That means no separate app, no extra sign-up. For a platform with over a billion monthly active users, the potential reach is enormous. Durov didn't give a launch date, but the ambition is clear — he wants crypto to be as easy as sending a text.
Gram token jumps
The news pushed Gram higher. The token gained 7% in the hours after the announcement, a sign that investors see real utility ahead. If Telegram's wallet takes off, Gram could become a payment method used by hundreds of millions, not just a trading asset.
Zero fees, big promise
Durov emphasized that transactions would be free. That's a sharp contrast to most crypto wallets, where network fees can eat into small transfers. For Telegram's user base — especially in countries where banking is limited or expensive — a zero-fee wallet could be a practical tool. Sending money across borders, paying for services, tipping creators — all without a cut taken out.
No launch date yet
Telegram hasn't set a timeline. The company has the user base and the technical team, but building a secure wallet at scale takes time. Durov's announcement sets the direction. Now the question is how fast Telegram can deliver.
