Japanese Game Developer Gumi Launches Bitcoin and Altcoin Fund with SBI

Japanese game developer Gumi is launching a Bitcoin and altcoin fund in partnership with financial giant SBI. The move deepens Gumi's bet on crypto, particularly XRP, as the company nearly doubled its digital asset holdings over the past year.

Partnering with SBI

Gumi didn't disclose the fund's size or target raise. But the partnership with SBI — one of Japan's largest financial groups and a longtime crypto backer — gives the fund immediate credibility. SBI runs its own crypto exchange and has invested heavily in Ripple, the company behind XRP.

XRP at the center

Gumi's crypto business has revolved around XRP for a while. The company has been building games and other applications on the XRP Ledger. This fund is another piece of that strategy, letting investors get exposure to Bitcoin and other altcoins while keeping XRP as the core thesis.

Doubling down on digital assets

Over the past year, Gumi nearly doubled its crypto holdings. The firm didn't break out exact numbers, but the growth signals a shift from a traditional game developer to a more diversified crypto player. The timing isn't accidental — Japan's regulatory environment has become clearer for crypto funds, and institutional interest is rising.

Gumi hasn't announced a launch date for the fund yet. It's not clear whether the fund will be open to retail investors or limited to institutions. What is clear: Gumi is all in on crypto, and XRP is leading the way.
