Jesse Pollak is stepping back from leading the Base app, handing leadership to Coinbase. He admitted his bet on on-chain social economy failed to drive crypto adoption as expected. The Base App launched in 2025 as a rebrand from Coinbase Wallet into an 'everything app' combining social networking, trading, messaging, AI tools, and creator monetization. But it didn't achieve widespread adoption.
Why Pollak is stepping back
Pollak said builders did drive the next adoption phase through stablecoins, prediction markets, perp trading, and tokenization. But social platforms like Farcaster, Zora, mini apps, and creator coins failed to gain traction. The on-chain social economy bet simply didn't pay off. Pollak acknowledged that the vision of turning the app into a social hub didn't attract the mass audience he hoped for.
Jordan Fish, better known as Cobie, will take over Pollak's position and lead the product's next chapter. Fish is a well-known figure in crypto circles, and his appointment signals a shift in direction. The Base app will now be steered by Coinbase directly, with a focus on what actually worked: trading, payments, and AI agents.
Pollak's new focus
Pollak's new mission is to make Base a blockchain for global finance. He wants to focus on trading, payments, and AI agents — areas that have shown real adoption. This is a clear pivot from the social experiment. Base faces growing competition from companies like Robinhood and Stripe, both of which are building their own crypto infrastructure. Pollak said Base wants to earn users' trust back rather than expect loyalty by default. That's a frank admission for a project that launched with high hopes.
Competition and trust
The timing isn't great. Robinhood and Stripe are both pushing into crypto services, and they have existing user bases. Base needs to differentiate itself. Pollak's comment about earning trust suggests the app's early hype didn't translate into lasting confidence. With Cobie at the helm, the next few months will show whether a finance-first approach can revive the platform.
