Joseph Lubin, the CEO and founder of Consensys and a co-founder of Ethereum, stated this week that the world's entire economy will eventually be tokenized. He attributed the origins of that shift to Ethereum, the blockchain he helped create.
The tokenization thesis
Lubin didn't mince words. He said the whole economy — every asset, every market, every form of value — will end up on tokenized rails. That includes stocks, bonds, real estate, commodities, intellectual property, and even intangible things like carbon credits or reputation. In his view, tokenization isn't a niche experiment. It's the endpoint for global finance.
His prediction comes as blockchain-based tokenization of real-world assets has been slowly expanding, but Lubin's claim is far more sweeping than most industry forecasts. He sees it as inevitable, not optional.
Ethereum's role
Lubin was clear about where it all started. He credited Ethereum as the origin of the tokenization movement. The smart contract platform, launched in 2015, made it possible to create and trade tokens that represent anything of value. Before Ethereum, tokenization was mostly theoretical. After it, projects began issuing tokenized securities, stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens at scale.
By pointing back to Ethereum, Lubin is reinforcing his long-standing bet that the network he co-founded will remain the backbone of the tokenized economy — even as competitors like Solana, Avalanche, and newer layer-2 chains gain ground.
If Lubin is right, the shift to a fully tokenized economy would remake how value is transferred, settled, and owned. Intermediaries like banks, brokers, and clearinghouses could be bypassed or replaced by smart contracts. It would also mean that every asset becomes programmable — able to be divided, traded, and lent in ways that physical assets can't.
But the timeline matters. Lubin didn't give one. He said the entire economy will be tokenized, not when. That leaves room for debate about how fast regulators, institutions, and infrastructure will catch up.
Consensys, the company Lubin runs, has been building the tools for this future — including MetaMask, Infura, and enterprise Ethereum solutions. His statement this week is as much a mission statement as a prediction.
