Kalshi Launches Bitcoin Perps, Giving US Traders a Regulated Leverage Route

Kalshi, the US-based exchange, has launched Bitcoin perpetual futures. The product gives American traders a direct route to leverage, a market that's been run mostly by offshore platforms. It's a move that could shift where US crypto volume lands.

The first regulated perp

Perpetual futures are the workhorse of crypto trading. They let you trade price with no expiry, and a funding rate keeps the contract in sync with the underlying. For years, that product has lived offshore, outside the reach of US oversight. Kalshi's version is different — it's a regulated product on a US exchange.

That matters. US traders have had a gap. They could use traditional futures, but those expire and move differently. Perps are what many actually want, and now they have a way to get it without leaving the country.

Demand that kept building

The appetite for regulated leverage has been there for a while. US users have opened offshore accounts or used workarounds, and regulated venues have been slow to offer perps. Kalshi is stepping into that hole.

It's not just about having the product. It's about trust. A regulated exchange gives institutions and retail traders something offshore venues can't — a clear legal footing. That could pull volume back to US shores.

Pressure on traditional venues

Kalshi's move also pressures the older venues that offer crypto futures but not perps. They've relied on their existing products, but the demand for a perpetual contract has been growing. Now there's a regulated alternative, and that's a direct challenge.

The outcome isn't guaranteed. Perps need deep liquidity to be useful, and building that takes time and market making. But the first step is done. Kalshi has the product and the regulatory basis.

What to watch next

The key question is whether liquidity follows. If Kalshi's perps can attract enough traders, other US venues will have to respond. If not, it's a nice option but nothing more. Either way, the product is now live, and that's a change from a month ago.

Watch for Kalshi to publish volume figures or expand the offering. The US crypto market just got a new tool, and it's worth keeping an eye on how the old guard reacts.
