Kraken has opened up U.S. stock trading to eligible customers across the European Economic Area, letting them buy traditional shares and tokenized versions of U.S. equities in the same account they already use for crypto. The expansion builds on the exchange's existing xStocks tokenized offering, which had already introduced tokenized U.S. stocks to the platform.
One account, two asset classes
The change means EEA users can now hold regular stocks and crypto side by side, without juggling separate brokers or wallets. Kraken said the move is aimed at simplifying access to U.S. markets for European traders who want both traditional and digital assets in a single place. The tokenized versions — which represent ownership in the underlying equities — sit alongside the conventional listings, giving users a choice of format.
From xStocks to full access
Kraken's xStocks product already offered tokenized U.S. equities, but this expansion brings traditional stock trading into the mix. That's a notable step for an exchange best known for crypto. The company is effectively blurring the line between the two worlds, letting users pick whichever format suits them — a real stock or its tokenized equivalent — depending on their preference. For those who want the simplicity of a token, the xStocks route remains; for those who prefer the standard listing, that's now available too.
Eligibility and rollout
Not every EEA resident gets access right away. Kraken said the service is available to "eligible customers," though it didn't spell out the exact criteria. The rollout is happening across the region this week, with the feature appearing in the Kraken app and web platform. Existing users should see the option to trade U.S. stocks appear in their accounts if they qualify. The exchange is likely to phase in access over the coming days.
For EEA-based investors, the practical upside is straightforward: they can diversify into U.S. equities without leaving their crypto exchange. That removes a layer of friction — no need to open a separate brokerage account or transfer funds between platforms. It also gives them a choice between holding a tokenized version of a stock and the real thing, depending on how they want to manage exposure. The single-account structure means balances and positions can be monitored in one place, which is a small but meaningful convenience for active traders.
The expansion is the latest sign that Kraken is pushing deeper into traditional finance, even as it continues to build out its crypto services. Whether other exchanges follow suit remains an open question, but for now, EEA users have a new way to trade U.S. stocks — right next to their bitcoin.
