Kraken Launches CFTC-Regulated Spot Margin Trading for US Retail Clients

Kraken rolled out spot margin trading for U.S. retail customers on Kraken Pro today, marking one of the first such offerings to sit under direct CFTC oversight. The exchange says users can open long or short positions with up to 10x leverage — and they don't need accredited investor status to get in.

What's actually different

Most crypto margin products for U.S. customers have been limited to derivatives — futures and perpetuals — and often require accredited investor status or a separate entity structure. Kraken's new service is labeled spot margin, meaning the underlying trade settles in the actual crypto asset rather than a cash-settled contract. The CFTC's blessing gives it a regulatory wrapper that most competitors haven't matched for retail spot margin.

Users post existing crypto holdings as collateral. There's no separate loan process; the system adjusts buying power in real time using the assets already in the account. Kraken also provides live risk metrics so traders can monitor liquidation levels without guessing.

Ten times leverage, zero accreditation

The 10x leverage cap is in line with what retail traders often get on offshore platforms, but the absence of an accredited investor hurdle is the real differentiator. In traditional finance, margin trading with leverage above a certain threshold typically requires a net worth above $1 million or an income north of $200,000. Kraken is skipping that entirely.

That opens the door to a much wider pool of traders — anyone who can pass standard KYC and has crypto to pledge. The trade-off is that leverage amplifies losses as well as gains, and the real-time risk dashboard is there to help users avoid nasty surprises.

Regulatory context

The CFTC has been tightening its grip on crypto spot and derivatives markets. By registering the margin product with the agency, Kraken is positioning itself ahead of any future mandate that might require similar treatment for leveraged spot trading. The move also signals that the exchange sees a path to compliant innovation without waiting for Congress.

The service went live this morning on Kraken Pro. Existing users can toggle margin mode in their trading interface. New users need to complete identity verification and accept the margin terms before accessing leverage.
