Kraken Launches USD-Settled Bitcoin and Ether Options

Kraken rolled out USD-settled bitcoin and ether options this week, adding a new derivatives product to its platform. The Wyoming-based exchange says the move addresses a design gap, not a lack of demand. Crypto derivatives have been slow to catch on, Kraken argues, because the products themselves weren't built right.

Why design matters

Kraken's claim is straightforward: traders want these instruments, but the structure of existing options turned them off. The exchange didn't specify what design flaws it sees in competitors' offerings. But the new contracts settle in dollars, not in the underlying crypto — a feature that could appeal to institutional players who want to avoid the tax and custody headaches of holding digital assets directly.

A Wyoming base

Kraken operates out of Wyoming, a state that has positioned itself as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction. The company's regulatory status there may have helped clear the path for a new derivatives product. The exchange did not say whether it consulted with state regulators before the launch.

What's available

The options cover both bitcoin and ether. They are cash-settled, meaning payouts come in U.S. dollars rather than the cryptocurrency itself. That structure is common in traditional finance but less so in crypto, where many derivatives still settle in the native token. Kraken's move could push other exchanges to follow suit. Users can trade the options through Kraken's web and mobile interfaces. The exchange did not disclose the fee structure or minimum contract size.

The options are live on Kraken's platform now. The exchange hasn't announced plans for additional underlyings or expiries. For now, it's betting that better design will bring the demand it says was always there.
