Kraken Sets Sights on Europe for Next Phase of Crypto Options Rollout

Kraken is turning its attention to Europe as the next market for its crypto options product, the company confirmed this week. The exchange has been gradually expanding its derivatives offering, and European clients are now in the pipeline — though a specific launch date and final regulatory sign-off have not yet been announced.

What Kraken has said so far

Kraken has not provided a timeline for when European users will be able to trade options. The company said it is working through the necessary regulatory steps but did not name which national regulator or EU framework it is engaging with. A Kraken spokesperson said the firm is “committed to bringing options to our European clients” but declined to comment on whether approval from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission or another authority is required.

The exchange already offers options trading in the U.S. and in some other jurisdictions. Europe represents a significant next step given the region’s size and its evolving crypto regulatory landscape under MiCA.

Why Europe matters now

The Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, which came into full effect earlier this year, has given crypto firms a clearer rulebook across the European Union. That clarity is a double-edged sword: it opens the door for compliant products but also imposes strict requirements on derivatives and leverage. Kraken’s move suggests it sees a path that fits within those rules.

Other exchanges have already launched options in Europe, so Kraken is not first to the market. But the company has been building out its derivatives infrastructure for years, and this expansion is a natural next step.

What’s still missing

Two key pieces are outstanding: regulatory confirmation and a firm launch date. Without those, European traders are left waiting. Kraken has not said whether it will offer the same contract types — weekly, monthly, or perpetual options — that it lists elsewhere. Pricing and margin requirements also remain unannounced.

The timing is notable. Crypto options trading volumes have been climbing this year, and retail interest in structured products is growing. But regulators are watching closely, especially after several high-profile derivatives blow-ups in previous cycles.

What to watch for

The next concrete milestone will be a regulatory nod from whichever EU authority Kraken is dealing with. That could come in weeks or months. Until then, the exchange is likely to keep quiet on specifics. European crypto traders will have to wait for the official green light before they can start trading options on Kraken.
