The AI agent angle
Lightning Labs is pitching L402 specifically for AI agents. As autonomous software becomes more common — scraping data, calling APIs, executing tasks — those agents need a way to pay for resources without human oversight. L402 gives them that. An agent can request a resource, get a payment challenge, send a Lightning invoice, and receive access, all in seconds. No credit cards, no accounts, no humans in the loop.
