Lombard Finance Launches Bitcoin-Collateralized Stablecoin Lending for Institutions

Lombard Finance has rolled out a Bitcoin-collateralized stablecoin lending product, the company confirmed Thursday. The offering is designed to give institutional investors a way to borrow stablecoins against their Bitcoin holdings without leaving a DeFi environment. Flow Traders, the Amsterdam-based market maker, is the pilot partner.

What the product does

The product lets institutions deposit Bitcoin as collateral and borrow stablecoins in return. It runs on a DeFi framework, meaning loans are managed through smart contracts rather than a traditional bank. Lombard Finance is positioning it as a bridge between the liquidity of Bitcoin and the stability of fiat-pegged tokens — a setup that could appeal to funds and treasuries looking to put their crypto to work without selling it.

Flow Traders is the first to test the system. The firm is known for providing liquidity across crypto and traditional markets, so its involvement signals that the product has passed some level of due diligence. Neither side disclosed the size of the pilot or the specific stablecoin being used.

The $4.31 billion question

Lombard Finance referenced a figure of $4.31 billion in its announcement, though the context was not fully spelled out. It likely refers to the total value locked in Bitcoin-collateralized lending markets or the addressable market for institutional DeFi lending. Either way, the number underscores the scale Lombard is aiming for — this isn't a small experiment.

The timing is notable. Institutional interest in DeFi has been growing steadily this year, but most lending products still rely on Ethereum-based collateral. A Bitcoin-native option could open up a much larger pool of capital, given that Bitcoin remains the largest crypto asset by market cap.

Lombard Finance plans to expand the product to additional partners in the coming months. The company hasn't said whether it will eventually open the service to retail users, but the institutional focus is clear for now. Flow Traders will likely provide feedback on the system's reliability and capital efficiency before any wider rollout.

The product goes live immediately for Flow Traders. Lombard Finance said it will share more details on the stablecoin and loan terms after the pilot phase.
