Meme coins have fallen to a record low share of the altcoin market, according to an analyst at CryptoQuant. The reading is the weakest the firm has logged for the sector, and it comes after a stretch in which tokens built on jokes and internet memes had repeatedly punched above their weight.
The shift is about allocation, not a single coin's price. Traders who once parked money in dog-themed tokens are spreading it elsewhere across altcoins, and that rotation is now visible in the share data CryptoQuant tracks.
What the record low actually shows
Market share isn't the same thing as a price chart. A token can rally and still lose ground if the rest of the market grows faster, and that's roughly what's happened here. Meme coins' slice of the altcoin pie has compressed to a level CryptoQuant hasn't recorded before. The analyst framed the decline as a sign that investor preferences are shifting, not as a verdict on any individual token.
That distinction matters. Meme coins have historically been a sentiment trade — they run when risk appetite is high and stall when it isn't. A shrinking share suggests the money that used to chase them is finding other uses, at least for now.
Where the money might be going
The facts here don't name which sectors are picking up the slack, so it's worth being careful about assuming. What CryptoQuant's analyst does say is that the meme coin decline points to changing preferences among altcoin buyers. Read plainly, that means capital is rotating within the altcoin universe rather than leaving it outright.
Rotation is normal in crypto. What's less normal is meme coins sitting at the bottom of the share table. For most of the past few years they were the loudest part of the market, and loud often meant crowded.
The volatility question
CryptoQuant's note flags two possible paths from here: more volatility, or a rebound. Those aren't contradictory. A sector that has been beaten down in share terms can whip around hard in both directions, and meme coins have a track record of doing exactly that.
The analyst's caution is worth taking at face value. A record low share is a data point, not a forecast. It tells you where things stand right now. It doesn't tell you where they go next.
What to watch
The next CryptoQuant share update will show whether this is a one-off reading or the start of a trend. If meme coins' share keeps sliding, the rotation story gets stronger. If it snaps back, the record low becomes a footnote.
For now, the number is on the board: the smallest slice of the altcoin market that CryptoQuant has recorded for meme coins. Everything after this is a question of whether traders treat that as a buying opportunity or a signal to stay away.
