Metaplanet Transfers 3,881 BTC in Three Hours, No Word on Whether It's Selling

Metaplanet, the world's third-largest public holder of Bitcoin, transferred 3,881 BTC — worth roughly $247 million to $250 million — over the past three hours. The company hasn't said whether it's selling, and the timing is raising eyebrows given its current paper loss.

The transfer

The transfer was detected on-chain and reported by blockchain trackers. Metaplanet has not issued a statement. Other Bitcoin treasury companies, including Strategy, have sold holdings this year, so the market is on alert. But a transfer alone doesn't confirm a sale — it could be a move to custody or collateral.

The paper loss

Metaplanet currently holds 43,000 BTC after its latest purchase of 2,823 BTC for $222 million in early July. Its average acquisition price is $96,191, and total spending has exceeded $4.1 billion. With Bitcoin's price correction, the company is sitting on a paper loss of $1.4 billion, or about 34% below its average cost.

The 100,000 BTC goal

Metaplanet has said it wants to hold 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026. That goal looks increasingly out of reach. The company's purchase frequency has slowed, and its current portfolio of 43,000 BTC is less than half the target. Even if it resumed aggressive buying, the math doesn't work at current prices.

What to watch

The next concrete signal will be Metaplanet's monthly holdings disclosure. If the 3,881 BTC no longer appears on the balance sheet, that's a sale. If it shows up under a different custody arrangement, it's something else. Until then, the transfer is just a transfer — but in a year when other treasury companies have sold, it's not nothing.
