MoonPay Launches PayBox for AI Agents to Execute Crypto Trades and Payments
MoonPay has launched PayBox, a tool that lets AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude execute crypto trades and online payments on behalf of users. The feature gives AI agents a dedicated wallet and the ability to transact within user-set limits, marking a step toward autonomous financial agents.

How PayBox works

PayBox integrates with large language models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. Users grant the AI permission to perform specific actions — buying or selling crypto, paying for services, or moving funds — within predefined boundaries. The AI agent can then initiate those transactions directly through MoonPay's infrastructure without requiring manual approval for each one.

AI assistants have been limited to information tasks and content generation. Giving them the ability to transact opens up use cases like automated subscription payments, recurring crypto purchases, or even AI-managed trading strategies. MoonPay is positioning PayBox as a bridge between conversational AI and real-world financial actions.

The permission model

User control is central to the design. Users set spending caps, whitelist specific actions, and can revoke access at any time. This addresses the obvious security concerns around letting an AI handle money. MoonPay says the permissions are granular enough to prevent unauthorized transactions while still allowing the AI to act autonomously within the guardrails.

What comes next

MoonPay hasn't announced which other AI platforms it plans to support beyond ChatGPT and Claude. The launch comes as regulators globally are scrutinizing both crypto payments and AI autonomy. How PayBox handles compliance — especially around KYC and transaction monitoring — will likely determine how quickly it gains traction with mainstream users.
