MoonPay rolled out a new app this week that lets users buy Bitcoin and Solana by speaking to ChatGPT. The integration turns the chatbot into a voice-activated crypto purchasing tool — no typing, no clicking through menus.
How the voice purchase works
Users open the MoonPay app and initiate a voice conversation with ChatGPT. They can say something like “buy $100 of Bitcoin” or “get me some Solana,” and the chatbot processes the order through MoonPay’s payment infrastructure. The company says the feature relies on OpenAI’s voice API, not a custom-built voice recognition system.
Voice-based crypto buying is still rare. Most on-ramps require a browser or mobile app with manual entry. If MoonPay’s integration catches on, it could lower the barrier for people who find standard interfaces intimidating. It also gives ChatGPT a direct revenue channel — every purchase flows through MoonPay’s fee structure.
What’s available now
For now, only Bitcoin and Solana are supported. MoonPay hasn’t said whether other tokens will follow or when the feature might expand beyond the initial app release. The company is best known as a payment rails provider for major exchanges like Binance and Coinbase, but has been pushing its own consumer-facing products recently.
Still early days
The app is live today, but adoption will depend on whether users trust a chatbot with their payment details. Voice purchases also raise security questions — accidental commands or unauthorized use of a phone left unlocked could lead to unwanted buys. MoonPay hasn’t detailed any additional safeguards beyond standard 2FA.
