Moonwell, a DeFi lending protocol, has put forward a proposal to launch initially on the Ethereum mainnet. The initiative, labeled MIP-E00, outlines the technical and governance steps needed to bring Moonwell's lending markets to Ethereum's base layer. If approved, the move would put Moonwell in direct competition with established players like Aave and Compound on their home turf.
What MIP-E00 proposes
The proposal is still in its early stages — the team calls it an initial launch framework. MIP-E00 covers smart contract deployment, liquidity seeding, and the migration of some governance functions to Ethereum. Moonwell currently operates on Base and Optimism; an Ethereum mainnet listing would give it access to the largest pool of DeFi liquidity and institutional users. The protocol's native token, WELL, would play a central role in the new market's incentive structure, according to the proposal text.
Competition heats up
Ethereum's lending sector is already crowded. Aave holds about $12 billion in total value locked on the network, Compound around $3 billion. Moonwell's entry could intensify competition for yield and user deposits — especially if it offers higher borrowing caps or novel collateral types. The proposal doesn't specify exact rates or incentives yet, but the market is watching. The timing isn't great for incumbents: Aave's governance has been debating fee switches, and Compound just wrapped a controversial treasury reallocation vote.
Governance concerns emerge
Not everyone is cheering the news. Some community members have flagged potential centralization risks in the proposed launch structure. MIP-E00 gives the Moonwell Foundation significant control over initial market parameters and emergency pause functions. Transparency advocates want clearer audit reports and a longer public comment period before any code goes live. The proposal's draft says the foundation will gradually cede control to a decentralized autonomous organization, but critics argue the timeline is vague. A formal vote on MIP-E00 is expected within two weeks.
