Morpho Launches Fixed-Rate Lending Protocol Morpho Midnight on Base

Morpho has rolled out a new lending protocol called Morpho Midnight on Base, bringing fixed interest rates and defined maturity dates to the platform. The launch adds a distinct option for users who want predictable borrowing costs, sitting alongside the existing variable-rate markets on Morpho Blue.

Fixed rates and defined maturities

Morpho Midnight lets lenders and borrowers lock in a rate for a set period. Instead of floating rates that shift with market conditions, the protocol uses fixed-rate terms with specific end dates. That means a borrower knows exactly how much interest they'll owe over the life of the loan, and a lender knows their return upfront.

The system operates on Base, a layer-2 network built on Ethereum and backed by Coinbase. By deploying on Base, Morpho taps into lower transaction costs and faster settlement times compared to mainnet Ethereum.

How it differs from Morpho Blue

Morpho Blue, the company's earlier protocol, relies on variable-rate lending. Interest rates there adjust based on supply and demand, which can catch borrowers off guard if rates spike. Morpho Midnight offers a second lane: users can choose between the flexibility of variable rates or the certainty of a fixed rate with a set maturity.

Both protocols share the same underlying infrastructure. Morpho's design uses a non-custodial, permissionless model where lenders supply assets directly to markets. The addition of fixed-rate markets doesn't change that core setup.

For borrowers, fixed rates remove the risk of rising costs during volatile periods. For lenders, they lock in a yield without worrying about a sudden drop in variable rates. The trade-off is that fixed-rate loans typically require lenders to commit capital for the full term, and borrowers may face penalties for early repayment.

Morpho hasn't disclosed specific rate ranges or maturity lengths for the initial markets. The protocol is live now, and users can start interacting with the fixed-rate pools on Base.

The launch positions Morpho Midnight as a complement to Blue's variable-rate markets. Whether the fixed-rate option gains traction depends on how DeFi users weigh predictability against the potential for higher variable returns. The protocol is open for business, and the market will decide.
