Morpho Midnight Launches Fixed-Rate Lending on Base Network

Morpho Midnight Launches Fixed-Rate Lending on Base Network

Morpho Midnight has gone live on the Base network, offering fixed-rate, fixed-term credit markets for the first time on the platform. The new service supports cbBTC/USDC trading pairs, giving users a way to lock in lending terms rather than dealing with variable rates. The launch is part of Morpho's broader push to bring more predictable DeFi lending to its ecosystem, which currently holds $11 billion in total value locked.

What Morpho Midnight offers

The product lets lenders and borrowers agree on a specific interest rate and duration upfront. That's a departure from the floating-rate model that dominates most decentralized lending protocols. On Morpho's existing markets, rates shift with supply and demand. Midnight freezes them for the life of the loan. The cbBTC/USDC pair is the first available market, though the team has said more pairs could follow.

Morpho Midnight runs on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase. That means transactions settle faster and cheaper than on Ethereum mainnet, while still inheriting its security. For users holding cbBTC — Coinbase's wrapped bitcoin — the new market offers a way to earn yield or borrow against their position without worrying about rate swings.

Why fixed-rate lending matters

Variable-rate lending can be a headache for borrowers who need predictable costs. If rates spike, a loan can suddenly become expensive or even get liquidated. Fixed-rate terms remove that uncertainty. Lenders, meanwhile, know exactly what they'll earn over the loan period. That's a big deal for institutions or anyone managing cash flow.

Morpho isn't the first to try fixed-rate DeFi lending — protocols like Yield Protocol and Notional have done it before. But Morpho brings a large existing user base and $11 billion in TVL. The question is whether that liquidity will migrate to the new fixed-rate pools or stay in the variable-rate ones.

Morpho's position in DeFi

Morpho started as a lending optimizer on Ethereum, routing user deposits to the best rates on Aave and Compound. It later launched its own lending pools. The platform now has $11 billion locked across multiple chains. Midnight is its latest product, and the choice of Base as the launch chain signals where Morpho sees growth. Base has been attracting retail and institutional users thanks to low fees and Coinbase's backing.

The cbBTC/USDC market is a natural fit. cbBTC is one of the most popular wrapped bitcoin tokens, and USDC is a stablecoin with deep liquidity. If the fixed-rate model catches on, Morpho could expand to other pairs and even other chains. For now, the team is watching how the first market performs.

No launch date has been announced for additional markets. Users can start supplying or borrowing on the cbBTC/USDC pool immediately.
