Why capital efficiency matters

In a repo, the seller agrees to buy back the bond at a later date. The difference in price is the interest. Settlement delays can tie up capital, so a system that settles instantly could reduce the amount of collateral needed. That's the capital efficiency angle MUFG is exploring.

Operational efficiency is another driver. A blockchain-based system could automate parts of the settlement process, cutting down on manual steps and reconciliation. But again, these are goals, not results.

From proof of concept to production
