No Evidence of Crypto Funding in India's Cockroach Janta Protests, Analysis Shows

An investigation by BeInCrypto found no public evidence that crypto played a meaningful role in financing the Cockroach Janta Party protests that have gripped New Delhi this month. Despite speculation on social media, on-chain data and exchange flows show no surge in crypto activity tied to the movement, which began as an online satire in May and escalated after the NEET medical exam was cancelled over a paper leak.

What the data says

Google searches related to the protests spiked about 1,350% above baseline between July 18 and July 22. But searches for crypto buying actually fell about 18% over the same period. On the ground, estimated USDT/INR turnover on Indian exchanges CoinDCX and WazirX dropped roughly 30% during the protest escalation. The premium Indians typically pay for USDT narrowed by about 44% — a sign of weak demand, not a funding rush.

On-chain analysis of 637 publicly labeled CoinDCX and WazirX addresses showed no inflow surge. Average daily stablecoin inflows to the CoinDCX subset fell about 20%. Global exchange wallets — Binance, Coinbase, Bybit, KuCoin — also showed no surge; stablecoin inflows there fell between about 20% and 52% from baseline.

The token anomaly

Four unofficial Solana tokens generated about $1.48 million in decentralized exchange volume. But BeInCrypto found no public evidence connecting their creators, traders, or proceeds to protest organizers. Without a link, the volume looks like typical DEX noise, not a protest fund.

The forged letter

A letter presented as proof of support from Bangladesh's Jamaat-e-Islami was identified as a forgery by fact-checking site Alt News. The forgery added to the confusion but didn't change the underlying data picture.

The Cockroach Janta Party's immediate demand is the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Tens of thousands tried to march toward Parliament on July 20; police used tear gas and batons. Protesters have remained at Jantar Mantar since then. Haryana showed a 48% rise in a crypto-action search basket from a small baseline, but that doesn't establish transactions or protest financing. For now, the data says no — but the question of whether any crypto is moving behind the scenes remains unanswered.
